Psychology of Self Worth

Self worth is known as the value that you believe in yourself  regardless of the situation you’re in. It is different from self esteem, because people that think highly of themselves in general may have low self esteem depending on what is going on around them. But self worth, on the other hand, is your own love/belief in yourself and your value as a human being.

There are many competing theories to how you establish your own self-worth over the course of your life. The likelihood is that it is a combination of many different things that all help you build your own value in your mind.

• Self worth may be based on your success in interactions with others.
• Self worth may be based on persistent behaviours toward you.
• Self-worth may be based on interpretations/misinterpretations of behaviour.

Self worth is likely based on all of these factors. But what is interesting is that all of these are based on some form of perception. It is judging your own self worth by how you perceive that others have judged it. And like any type of perception, it is prone to confirmation bias – something that I will talk more about in the next post
